Llyn Arennig Fâch

The walk to Llyn Arennig Fâch is what sells this place, not the lake itself when you get there. From the car park near Betws-y-Coed, it's a steady climb through conifer forest that opens onto moorland proper - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people move to Wales and never leave.

The lake itself is modest. A dark mirror surrounded by rough grass and the odd windswept tree. No facilities, no crowds, no gift shop. You'll see Arennig Mór (the bigger mountain) looming across the valley, and on a clear day the views stretch far enough to justify the effort. Most people do this as a circuit walk rather than a there-and-back, making it a solid two to three hours if you're not rushing.

It's walker territory, full stop. If your idea of a lake visit involves cafés and viewing platforms, keep driving. But if you want to feel properly remote without needing crampons or a mountain guide, this works. Families with older kids who can manage moderate hills will find it rewarding. The solitude is the thing - you might see nobody else all afternoon.
