Llyn Alaw

Water sports enthusiasts have long known about this substantial reservoir, though it rarely makes the tourist trail. Llyn Alaw stretches across the northern reaches of Anglesey, just a few miles southwest of Amlwch, offering proper sailing and fishing opportunities without the crowds you'll find at more famous Welsh lakes.

The shoreline provides decent walking, though don't expect dramatic mountain backdrops - this is Anglesey, after all, where the landscape runs more to rolling farmland than Alpine drama. What you do get is space and relative quiet, plus some excellent birdwatching if that's your thing. The lake attracts various waterfowl throughout the year.

Fishing types rate it highly for coarse angling, while small boat sailing works well when conditions allow. Families might find it a bit limited unless they're keen on waterside walks or have their own kayaks to launch. There's no visitor centre or formal facilities, so come prepared.

Location-wise, it slots nicely into an Anglesey touring holiday. Several camping spots sit within easy reach, including Gadfa Touring Park and Dolydd campsite, both around four miles away. The nearby coast at Amlwch offers proper seaside attractions when you've had your fill of inland water. Allow a couple of hours unless you're planning serious fishing or sailing sessions.
