Llangasty Retreat House

The modest church at Llangasty, a few miles south of Brecon, sits quietly on the edge of the Brecon Beacons without fanfare or crowds. It's a small stone building that speaks to the deep Christian heritage of this part of Mid Wales - the kind of place you might stumble upon while walking the surrounding hills rather than deliberately seek out.

What draws people here is partly the history. This is old Wales, genuinely old, and the church carries that weight without making a fuss about it. The interior is simple, respectful, the sort of space where you can actually hear yourself think - a rarity these days. If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or the spiritual side of rural Wales, you'll find something genuine here. For casual visitors, though, it's more of a "while you're in the area" stop than a destination in itself. Twenty minutes max.

Brecon itself is the natural base - a proper market town with decent pubs and shops - and you're well positioned for the caravan parks nearby. Pencelli Castle is closest at just over two miles away, and both Cwmdu and Cefn Cantref are within easy striking distance for a walking holiday. The Beacons reward proper exploration, and Llangasty's quiet churchyard makes for a peaceful break between longer tramps across the hills.

Walkers and history types will get the most from it. Families after a quick distraction might find it a bit underwhelming. Go when the light is good - late afternoon works well - and allow yourself to actually sit for a moment rather than rushing through.
