Llanfihangel

The little church sits alone on a hillside just inland from Aberystwyth, and honestly, it's the kind of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out. Llanfihangel is a proper medieval Welsh church - modest, weathered, utterly lacking in fuss. The walk to reach it rewards you with views that stretch toward the coast, and on a clear day you can pick out Cardigan Bay in the distance.

Inside, it's sparse and authentic. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no interpretation boards explaining what you're looking at. Just thick stone walls, a simple altar, and the sort of quiet that makes you actually notice the sound of wind outside. For history types, especially those interested in early Christian Wales, there's something genuinely moving about standing in a building this old - the church dates back centuries, though pinning down exactly when requires some local knowledge or guesswork.

Realistic assessment: don't plan your day around it. But if you're based at Pengarreg Caravan Park or anywhere near Aberystwyth, and you fancy a proper walk with a destination that feels removed from the usual tourist trail, it's well worth the detour. Allow an hour for the walk and to potter about inside.
