Llandrindod Lake Park

The lake itself is the main draw here - a proper Victorian engineering feat that's been left to nature, creating something genuinely lovely for a walk. It's not vast, but it's got real character. You can loop around the water on designated paths, spotting waterfowl and the occasional heron if you're lucky. The woodland around it feels older than it probably is, which makes for a pleasant couple of hours away from Llandrindod Wells town centre.

It's free to access and works well as a break from a caravan holiday at Disserth (just 2.2 miles away) or any of the other parks scattered nearby. The walk is manageable - not strenuous, though some sections can be muddy. Families with young kids will manage fine, though it's not the sort of place that'll keep a bored teenager entertained for hours. Dog walkers love it.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon brings out the birds and gives you breathing space from other visitors. Weekday visits are generally quieter than weekends. The paths are open year-round, though autumn is particularly atmospheric when the water reflects the golden trees. Spring brings migrating birds if you're into that sort of thing.

Worth a half-day visit if you're staying in the area, especially if you're walking-focused. Don't expect dramatic scenery - this is understated Wales. But there's something restorative about circling a lake on a clear day, hearing nothing but water and woodland.
