Llanbedr Hill

The walk up Llanbedr Hill rewards you with proper 360-degree views across the Wye Valley - the kind of panorama that makes the climb feel worthwhile, even if your legs disagree partway up. It's a straightforward ascent from the fields near Builth Wells, nothing technical, but steep enough in places that you'll feel you've earned the vista. On a clear day you can see right across Mid Wales, rolling farmland spreading out below like a quilt.

This is walker territory, full stop. The hill doesn't have facilities or much infrastructure - it's just you, the slope, and the view. Allow a couple of hours return from the nearest car park, depending on fitness. There's no entrance fee because there's nothing to charge for. The beauty of Llanbedr is that it's genuine - no café, no interpretive boards, no crowds. If you're the type who likes earning their landscape rather than having it gift-wrapped, you'll get on with it fine. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog; older children who enjoy a proper hike will be fine.

If you're staying at one of the excellent holiday parks in the area - Great House Farm's pods are genuinely lovely, and Fforest Fields offers proper comfort - this makes an excellent half-day excursion. Combine it with exploring Builth Wells market town or visiting the Wye Valley circuit, and you've got a solid day's walking in Mid Wales. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the thin crowds and catch better light.
