Wye river to Erwood view

The stretch of the Wye between Builth Wells and Erwood delivers one of Mid Wales' most rewarding riverside walks, and the view from above is genuinely worth the effort. You're looking at a proper meander of the river through steep wooded banks, the water glinting silver if you time it right with the light. The walk itself isn't particularly taxing - most people can manage it in a couple of hours either direction - but the terrain is uneven enough that you'll need decent boots.

This is one for walkers and nature types rather than families after a quick photo stop. The appeal lies in the river's sheer force through the landscape here, the way the current picks up pace, the density of oak and ash crowding the banks. There's something quieter about it than the more famous bits of the Wye further south. You won't find visitor facilities or signage spelling out the geology, which is partly why it feels proper rather than managed.

If you're based at one of the nearby camping spots - Great House Farm is closest at just over a mile, though the others dotted around (Celtic Woodland, Bryndu, Penmaenau) are all within striking distance - this makes an excellent half-day venture. Start early to avoid the afternoon shadows flattening the view. The nearest town is Builth Wells, which has basic supplies but nothing fancy. Wear waterproofs regardless of the forecast; the banks stay damp year-round. Late autumn through winter offers the best light and fewest other walkers.
