Llan-Wen Hill

The walk up Llan-Wen Hill rewards you with proper 360-degree views across the Powys moorland - the kind of perspective that makes you understand why people settled this corner of Mid Wales. It's not a dramatic peak; the summit sits at a modest height, but the openness of the landscape means you can see for miles in all directions. On a clear day the Radnor Forest rises to the west, and the agricultural patchwork spreads out below like a quilt.

Walkers will find this rewarding. The ascent takes the best part of an hour from Presteigne, and it's a proper leg-stretcher without being punishing. Families with older kids manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the last stretch if you've been walking all morning. Allow two hours total if you're not rushing.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit itself - bring water and something to eat. It's free to walk, of course, and there's no set gate time. The boggy patches after rain can be annoying underfoot, so decent boots matter here.

If you're staying at one of the local parks - Rockbridge Park is closest at 2.5 miles away, while Hush Hush Glamping offers something a bit different - Llan-Wen works brilliantly as a half-day outing. Pair it with a wander around Presteigne itself, grab lunch, and you've got a solid day. Black Hall Lodges sits further out but still within reach. It's not spectacular, but it's the sort of walk that grounds you in real Welsh countryside rather than the tourist version.
