Littlehampton Redoubt

Grass-covered earthworks mark where Napoleonic-era soldiers once watched the Channel for French invasion fleets. Littlehampton Redoubt is one of several coastal fortifications built around 1805, part of Britain's defence network against Bonaparte's threatened invasion. What remains today are the distinctive star-shaped earthen ramparts that housed cannons and troops.

Honestly, there's not a huge amount to see unless you're properly into military history. The fort's outline is clear enough from the grassy banks, and information boards explain how it all worked, but kids might lose interest after twenty minutes. History enthusiasts will appreciate the strategic positioning overlooking the mouth of the River Arun, where enemy ships would have been spotted approaching Littlehampton's harbour.

The site sits on open ground near the town centre, so it's an easy walk from the seafront if you're already exploring Littlehampton's beaches and pier. Takes about half an hour to wander round and read the displays. Free to visit, which is always a bonus.
