Little Houber

The walk up Little Houber from Skipton direction is properly rewarding - you're climbing onto the Pennine moorland with views that stretch for miles across Yorkshire and Lancashire. It's not a massive peak, nothing like the Lake District fells, but the moorland terrain keeps it interesting and the air gets thinner faster than you'd expect.

What you get at the top is genuine solitude most days. There's no café, no visitor centre, no barriers - just heather, gritstone tors, and silence. The views across Malham Moor are the real draw here. On a clear day you can see right across the limestone country that makes this part of the Pennines so distinctive. Walkers and fell runners love it for that reason.

Allow yourself a good three hours there and back depending on your pace and fitness - it's not brutal but it's not a casual stroll either. No charges, naturally. Go midweek if you can, especially outside school holidays, because it gets busier than it should for somewhere this quiet.

If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Malham Glamping Pods is only three miles away, or Hedgerow if you want something equally solid - this makes a proper full day's walking combined with nearby Malham village and the limestone features around there. Peaks and Pods works too, though it's a touch further. The moorland walking here links beautifully with everything else in the area. Worth the legs.
