Little Dornell (Dòrnail Beag)

The walk up Little Dornell rewards you with views across the Dumfries and Galloway hills that feel properly earned. It's not a difficult climb - more of a steady trudge than a scramble - but the height gives you real perspective over the countryside rolling towards Castle Douglas.

You'll want proper walking boots and at least two hours if you're starting from the car park, longer if you're dawdling. The path isn't signposted brilliantly, so a map or offline download helps. On a clear day the views stretch for miles. On a grey day - which is most days here - it's still worth the effort, but don't expect drama.

This is for walkers wanting something with a bit of substance without needing mountaineering skills. Families with older kids manage it fine. You won't spend hours at the summit - there's no café, no visitor centre, just the view and space to catch your breath.

If you're based at Galloway Glamping or Loch Ken Holiday Park nearby, it's a natural day out that doesn't require driving far. Mollance Farm is slightly further but still close enough for a morning walk. The area around Castle Douglas has plenty of other hills if you're after a proper walking holiday, so use this as part of a bigger itinerary rather than a standalone trip. Late spring and early autumn are best - you'll miss the midges and the ground stays reasonably firm.
