Little Bog Hill

Little Bog Hill sits just outside Moffat, a proper modest summit that punches above its weight for views across the Southern Uplands. At 1,768 feet, it's not going to exhaust you - the walk takes a couple of hours return, making it ideal for families or anyone after an afternoon out without the serious graft. The climb itself is straightforward, boggy in patches (hence the name), and the ridge walk at the top opens up towards Hartfell and the surrounding moorland. On a clear day you're looking at real distance - far enough to make the effort worthwhile.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a scenic stroll - expect proper hill terrain, decent boots, and some navigation sense especially in cloud cover. The views reward the effort though, and it's mercifully quiet compared to the busier peaks in the area. Kids will manage it fine if they're used to a few hours on their feet, though younger ones might find the boggy sections tedious. There's nothing fancy at the summit - no café, no shelter - so bring what you need and plan for Scottish weather.

Getting there from Moffat takes minutes. If you're based at Howslack Farm caravan site or Riverside Holiday Park, both just four and a half miles away, this works as a cracking day out alongside exploring the town itself. It's the sort of walk that slots perfectly into a Dumfries and Galloway break without dominating your schedule. Free to access, naturally - just park up and go.
