Lionel's Hole

Small and completely unremarkable, this cave barely deserves the name. Found on the lower reaches of Cheddar Gorge's southern cliffs, Lionel's Hole amounts to little more than a shallow depression in the rock face that you can peer into for about thirty seconds before wondering why you bothered.

Unlike the famous show caves nearby, there's nothing to see here beyond a dark opening that extends perhaps ten feet into the limestone. No formations, no history, no dramatic chambers - just a hole that someone decided to give a name to. Kids might poke their heads in for a quick look, but they'll be more interested in the actual climbing opportunities on the rocks around it.

The walk from Cheddar village takes about twenty minutes up the gorge path, and frankly you're better off continuing to the proper viewpoints or the cave systems that actually offer something to explore. It's free to visit, naturally, since there's absolutely nothing here worth charging for.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Cheddar Woods Resort or the various glamping spots scattered around the area, you might stumble across it during a family walk. But don't make a special trip - save your energy for Gough's Cave or Jacob's Ladder instead. This one's for completists only.
