Lion Hill

The walk up Lion Hill from Moffat rewards you with proper 360-degree views across the Lowlands - on a clear day you can see all the way to the Lake District. It's a fairly straightforward hike of about an hour and a half there and back, nothing too taxing, which is precisely why it works so well as a half-day outing if you're based at Howslack Farm caravan site just down the road.

The hill itself isn't particularly dramatic - it's more about the accessibility of the vantage point than any summit drama. Walkers get the most out of this one, especially those who want a decent leg stretch without committing to a full day's expedition. Families with kids aged eight or above won't struggle with the gradient, though younger children might need a bit of encouragement on the way down. The surrounding moorland is genuinely pleasant in spring and early autumn, when the heather colours up and the midges aren't at their worst.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no car park in the traditional sense, just roadside parking near the town. Admission is free. The best time to go is either early morning if you want to avoid other walkers, or late afternoon when Moffat's day-trippers have headed home. If you're already caravan-based in the area, it makes for an excellent leg-stretcher between longer drives or as a gentle activity on a rest day.
