Linwood Wildlife Reserve

The reserve spreads across heathland between Ringwood and the New Forest proper - it's one of those places that demands a proper walk to appreciate properly. You're looking at open heath dotted with birch and pine, the sort of landscape that reveals itself slowly as you move through it rather than hitting you with instant drama.

What you get here depends entirely on what you're after. Birdwatchers come for the nightjars and woodlarks, particularly in late spring and summer when the calls are unmissable if you know what to listen for. The heathland itself is the draw for botanists - acid grassland that supports rare plants you won't see in managed gardens. Family groups with young kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour, if I'm honest. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities of note - just the heath.

Allow a good two to three hours if you're doing this properly, longer if you're serious about wildlife spotting. The footpaths are reasonably clear but it's open country so navigation requires a map or app. Spring through early autumn is far better than winter when the light dies fast and the moorland feels properly bleak.

Stay at Fernwood Glamping just down the road and you've got a solid base for exploring both this reserve and the wider New Forest - Ocknell and Longbeech campsites offer cheaper alternatives if you're not fussed about glamping pods. It's the sort of place that works best as part of a wider walking holiday rather than a standalone morning out.
