The walk up to Linnhall is straightforward enough from Lockerbie, but what you get at the top makes the climb worthwhile. It's a modest peak by Scottish standards - nothing that will have you gasping for air - yet the views across Dumfries & Galloway open up properly once you gain a bit of height.

This is walker territory, plain and simple. The summit itself isn't dramatic, but on a clear day you can see why people bother making the trip. The paths are decent, well-trodden, and the surrounding moorland has that rolling, gentle character that defines the Lowlands rather than the wilder terrain further north. Allow a couple of hours for a steady ascent and descent, maybe longer if you fancy a proper wander about at the top.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a bit dull - there's no tower, no café, no real focal point once you've arrived. It's just a hill with a view, which some people love and others find underwhelming.

It's close enough not to eat up your whole day, and it gets you out onto the hills without requiring serious mountaineering skills. Go on a settled day - the weather can turn quickly.
