Lingeybank Wood

Walking into Lingeybank Wood near Wigton feels like stepping back a few decades - the kind of place where the noise of the outside world properly melts away. It's a modest woodland, nothing dramatic, but if you're after a proper forest walk without the crowds or the gift shop, this is it.

The wood itself is straightforward: mixed trees, decent paths, and enough space to feel genuinely peaceful. It's the sort of spot where you can actually hear yourself think, which counts for a lot in Cumbria these days. The paths are manageable underfoot and work well for families with older kids or anyone wanting a gentle woodland wander rather than a fell hike. Expect to spend between 45 minutes and an hour here depending on how much you potter about.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared - bring water, especially in summer, and check the weather before you head in. It's free to access, which makes it a cracking alternative if you've already done the big attractions around Keswick and fancy something low-key.

If you're camping at Skiddaw View, Kestrel Lodge, or Forest Views caravan parks - all within a few miles - Lingeybank Wood makes a solid filler activity on a quieter day. Not a destination in itself, but a genuine breath of fresh air when you need one. Park in Wigton itself and walk in from there; it's only a short stroll.
