Elva Hill

The walk up Elva Hill is a proper no-nonsense climb, especially if you're tackling it from Wigton side. It's not a dramatic fell - more of a steady grind through farmland before the views open up. Once you're at the top, though, you get that satisfying sweep across the northern Lake District fells and towards the Solway Firth. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort.

This is walker territory rather than a casual stroll spot. Allow a couple of hours there and back, depending on your pace and how long you want to linger at the summit. The path isn't technical - just muddy in places - but it's relentless enough that you'll feel like you've earned the views. Families with younger kids might find it a bit much unless they're already hill-trained.

You'll get the most out of it if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Skiddaw View or Forest Views Caravan Park are within easy reach of Wigton. It fits well alongside other walks in this corner of the Lake District, though Elva Hill itself is the kind of fell you do for the exercise and the outlook rather than dramatic scenery. The real appeal is that it's quiet and unpretentious. You won't be elbowing tourists at the top, and that's exactly what makes it feel worth the walk.
