Cross Hill

Cross Hill isn't one of those peaks that'll stop you dead in your tracks with drama. But that's rather the point. Rising above Wigton in the northern Lake District fringes, it's a proper working hill - nothing theatrical, just solid walking territory with views that stretch across the Eden Valley and up towards the Caldbeck Fells if the weather plays ball.

The walk itself is straightforward and rewards anyone after a couple of hours in the fresh air without the slog of higher peaks. From Wigton you can be up and back comfortably before lunch, which makes it ideal for families who want actual achievement without small legs giving up halfway. The fell doesn't demand fell-running shoes or mountain wisdom - just decent boots and a willingness to head uphill.

If you're camped at Skiddaw View Holiday Park or Forest Views - both within easy striking distance - Cross Hill works brilliantly as a morning outing before the crowds hit. There's no cafe at the top, no gift shop, no infrastructure whatsoever. Bring a flask if you want one. You're there for the walking and the views, and on a clear day when you can actually see something, it's worth the effort.

Really, it suits walkers more than anyone else. Young kids might find the open fell a bit boring without the drama of proper mountains. But if you're after a decent leg-stretch with genuine countryside feel and you're staying in the area, it's exactly what you need.
