Lilleshall Hill

You can spot Lilleshall Hill from miles around - a proper cone of woodland rising out of the Shropshire flatlands near Shifnal. The walk up takes barely twenty minutes, but the effort pays off with views that sweep across to the Welsh hills on a clear day. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but there's something rather satisfying about climbing something that commands a landscape like this does.

The summit itself is modest - a flat wooded area with limited views from ground level, which catches some visitors out. You need to find your way to the edges of the trees to see anything worthwhile. That said, the walk is gentle enough for families with younger kids, though they might lose interest once they realise there's no dramatic viewpoint at the top. Serious hikers will barely break a sweat.

Go in autumn or spring when the woodland actually feels like something - summer crowds and overgrowth can make it feel a bit cramped. Winter's fine too if you don't mind muddy paths. Free to visit, obviously, and you can park near the base without fuss. Allow an hour including the walk and a bit of poking about at the top.

If you're staying at Ted's Farm just down the road, it's worth a morning outing before heading elsewhere in Shropshire. Pair it with Lilleshall Abbey, which sits below and adds a bit of historical substance to the day. The hill on its own is a pleasant stretch of legs, but not a destination unto itself.
