Lephinkill Chambered Cairn

The walk to Lephinkill Chambered Cairn takes you off the beaten path near Colintraive, down a track that feels properly remote despite being just a mile or so from civilisation. What you find at the end is a Bronze Age burial site - a low stone mound with a chamber inside that's been standing for around 4,000 years. It's not dramatic or Instagram-friendly. There are no reconstructed walls or visitor facilities. Just ancient stonework, moorland quiet, and the sense that you're looking at something genuinely old.

The appeal lies entirely in what appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers. If you're the type who gets excited about finding a neolithic passage or understanding how our ancestors buried their dead, this is worth the trek. Kids might manage twenty minutes before boredom sets in, unless they're the sort obsessed with Vikings and prehistoric stuff. The walk itself is the real draw - woodland and open hillside with decent views across Argyll.

You'll need proper boots after rain. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and no set hours - you walk when you fancy. Allow a couple of hours return from Colintraive if you're not rushing. It pairs well with Glendaruel Caravan Park just down the road, which sits at 5.0 stars and gives you a proper base for exploring this corner of Argyll. Combine it with walks around the Tighnabruaich area for a solid day out. Don't expect grandeur. Expect genuine Bronze Age archaeology, peace, and that particular Scottish landscape satisfaction.
