Stuchdan Capuill

The walk up Stuchdan Capuill from Colintraive is one of those Argyll hills that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards you properly if you get the weather right. It's not a massive undertaking - most walkers manage the ascent in under two hours - but the views across the Firth of Clyde make it genuinely worth the effort.

You're looking at a straightforward moorland route that builds gradually, nothing technical underfoot, though it can be boggy after rain. The peak itself sits at 437 metres, which means you get that satisfying sense of elevation without needing scrambling skills or specialist kit. Clear days are exceptional - you'll see across to Bute and beyond, and on the way down you'll understand why people keep coming back to this corner of Argyll.

History types might appreciate the old drove routes that cross these hills, remnants of centuries when cattle moved through here on their way to southern markets. It's subtle stuff - more a feeling than marked attractions - but it adds texture to the walk.

Families with teenagers will find it manageable as a half-day outing from Glendaruel Caravan Park, which sits just 5.7 miles away and offers decent base camp facilities. Younger children might flag on the return descent. The whole thing's free, naturally - it's just Scottish hillwalking. Go early in the day; afternoon mist rolls in regularly even when the morning was clear.
