An Socach

An Socach rises above Colintraive as a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll - just under 900 metres, which means it punches above its weight for effort. The route climbs steadily through moorland and craggy terrain, and once you're up there, the views across the Firth of Bute and towards the Cowal Peninsula are genuinely impressive. On a clear day you can see why people bother with the ascent.

It's a hill for walkers who want a proper workout without needing technical climbing skills. Most fit folk will manage it in three to four hours round trip from the car park, though you'll want decent boots and weather that isn't completely foul - exposed ridges mean wind whips across the summit. Families with younger children might find it a slog, but teenagers and anyone who enjoys a decent Scottish hill will rate it.

There's no visitor centre or facilities on the mountain itself - bring water and something to eat. The walk is free, as these things tend to be in Scotland. If you're staying at Loch Eck Caravan Park or any of the sites dotted around the Cowal area, An Socach makes a solid day's activity that gets you away from the caravan without endless driving. The nearby Glendaruel Caravan Park puts you even closer. Time it for when the midges aren't too fierce - spring or autumn are your best bets.
