Leith Hill

The walk up Leith Hill is genuinely one of the best half-hours you'll spend in Surrey. At 965 metres, it's the highest point in South East England - not exactly Alpine, but the views across the Weald are proper expansive on a clear day. You can see right across to the South Downs if the weather's playing ball.

The National Trust manages the whole thing, and there's a Victorian tower at the summit that you can climb for an extra few quid if you fancy it. The actual ascent is steady rather than brutal; families with decent walkers won't struggle, though younger kids might flag on the final push. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from the car park, longer if you're taking photographs or stopping for breath.

What makes it work for a park holiday is the location - Dorking's practically on your doorstep, and there's decent camping and glamping scattered around the area. The Green Escape glamping site is barely a mile away, and Surrey Hills Yurts is just up the road. The walk itself is free, though parking might cost a few quid depending on where you leave the car. Go early if you're visiting on a weekend; the car park fills fast and the crowds do rather spoil the whole point of being on a hilltop.

It's the sort of walk that works best either very early morning or on a grey Tuesday. The views are the thing, so pick your weather.
