The Forge Gallery

The Forge Gallery sits just outside Dorking, a proper working arts space where you can actually watch makers at their benches rather than just peer at finished work behind glass. It's the kind of place where you turn up expecting a quick look round and end up chatting to a blacksmith or potter for twenty minutes because they're genuinely interested in what you think.

The gallery itself showcases work from resident artists and visiting makers - jewellery, metalwork, ceramics, textiles. Nothing feels precious or unapproachable. You're welcome to ask questions, watch demonstrations if timing works out, and there's often something being made on the day you visit. For families with teenagers who've got past the 'museums are boring' phase, this works brilliantly. Younger kids might lose interest after an hour unless there's something dramatic happening in the forge.

It's free to wander round, though obviously the work is for sale if anything catches your eye. Allow an hour minimum, longer if the artists are working and you want to linger. The real magic happens on quieter weekday afternoons when you're not dodging school parties.
