Leipzig Plantation

The woodland around Leipzig Plantation, just outside Calne, is one of those places that creeps up on you. You're wandering through ordinary Wiltshire countryside and suddenly the trees close in properly - tall conifers mixed with broadleaves, creating a real sense of being somewhere other than the Home Counties. It's a working forest, so don't expect manicured paths or interpretation boards at every turn. What you get instead is genuine woodland walking without the crowds.

There's a decent network of rides cutting through here, which makes it perfect if you've got kids who need space to burn off energy but you're not keen on a full moorland hike. The terrain is manageable, nothing technical underfoot, though it can get muddy after rain. Most walkers allow an hour to ninety minutes for a good loop, though you could stretch it if you're the lingering type.

Historywise, it's less interesting than the landscape itself - this is productive forest rather than ancient woodland with a story attached. But if you're staying at Mill Farm Glamping or any of the other spots around Calne, it's proper worth the drive. Combine it with a walk around the Wiltshire Downs or a visit to the town itself and you've got a solid afternoon sorted. The forest does what it does well: gives you trees, quiet, and enough room to think without trying to be something it isn't.
