Leighton Reservoir

The water at Leighton Reservoir sits surprisingly still, reflecting the Wensleydale fells like a sheet of dark glass. It's not one of those drama-filled lakes - no mountains looming over it, no tourist crowds snapping the same shot over and over. Instead it's genuinely quiet, the kind of place you can actually hear yourself think.

The walk around the water is straightforward enough, a gentle circuit that takes a couple of hours at a normal pace. You'll pass moorland and rough grassland, spot the occasional angler, and if you're lucky, some proper wild birds. It's proper fell country without needing fell-fitness. Families with kids aged eight or up won't struggle, though younger ones might find the walk a bit samey after the first half-hour.

Leighton works best as a breather between other Wensleydale activities rather than a destination in itself. Base yourself at Eastfield Glamping Farm - only 6.6 miles away - and you've got a solid morning's walk without driving across three counties. Leyburn sits close by too, good for supplies and a decent meal afterwards.

Timing matters here. Go on a grey, drizzly day and you'll understand why it's called the Dales rather than anywhere sunnier. Go on a clear day and the reflected sky lifts the whole thing. Bring binoculars if you're into birds. Bring a flask if you're not, because there's nowhere to grab a coffee. It won't take your breath away, but it will settle it.
