Leigh Park Methodist Church

A red-brick Methodist chapel sitting quietly on the edge of Leigh Park, just outside Emsworth. It's the sort of place you'd walk past without thinking twice, except it's genuinely worth a look if you're interested in Victorian nonconformist architecture.

The building dates from the 1880s and has that solid, unpretentious quality that Methodist churches do - no soaring spires or fancy stonework, just good honest brickwork and decent proportions. Inside, there's real character: original features, a proper sense of what worship looked like for ordinary working people a century and a half ago. It's small enough that you won't spend hours here, but large enough to feel genuinely impressive in its simplicity.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Mill Rythe is closest by car, or Hayling Island Holiday Park if you're after something more traditional - this makes an easy detour during a local walk. Emsworth itself is worth your time anyway, a proper Georgian sailing town with proper pubs and actual character. The church works best as part of a broader ramble through the area rather than a destination in itself.

Your best bet is getting there on foot from Emsworth town centre if the weather's decent. It's flat walking, takes maybe twenty minutes, and you'll see the actual Hampshire countryside rather than just driving through it. Call ahead if you want to look inside - opening hours aren't consistent - but the exterior alone tells you everything you need to know about Methodist pride and solid Victorian craftsmanship.
