Legbarrow Wood

The woodland floor at Legbarrow is thick with moss and leaf litter, soft underfoot after rain. It's a proper Cumbrian wood - mixed deciduous and conifer, nothing manicured or overworked, just a place where you can actually walk without feeling herded along a theme park trail.

The tracks wind through fairly gently, suitable for families who don't mind a bit of mud. There are enough fallen logs and stream crossings to keep children interested for a couple of hours, though teenagers might find it unremarkable. The canopy closes in enough to feel like proper woodland rather than a park, which is either a selling point or a drawback depending on what you're after.

It's a few miles north of Grange-over-Sands, accessible enough without being overrun. Free to enter, no facilities that I could find - bring a packed lunch if you're making an afternoon of it. Best visited after dry spells when the paths aren't completely waterlogged, though honestly that rules out half the year in Cumbria.

If you're staying at Haven Lakeland Leisure Park - which I wouldn't recommend based on the reviews - this wood could at least provide decent walking without driving far. Pair it with exploring Grange-over-Sands proper rather than treating it as a standalone destination. It's competent woodland walking, nothing more, but competent is fine if you've got an afternoon to fill and you're already in the area.
