Leckhampton Hill

The walk up Leckhampton Hill from Cheltenham takes about forty minutes if you're not dawdling, and it's steep enough to feel like proper exercise. The summit rewards you with the Cheltenham Racecourse spread out below and views across to the Welsh hills - genuinely impressive on a clear day, though you'll need to pick your weather carefully.

What makes it special is the Iron Age hill fort, though honestly the earthworks are subtle. You're really here for the ridge walk itself and that final kick to the top where the views open up properly. The path is well-marked and busy on weekends with local families and serious walkers alike. It's not a trudge through ancient ruins - it's a proper Cotswold ridge walk that happens to sit on archaeological remains.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the glamping spots within a couple of miles - Star Glamping or Big Skies are practically on your doorstep. You could easily combine it with a wander through Cheltenham's town centre afterwards. Allow two to three hours for the round trip with a decent pause at the top. Free, obviously. Best visited October through April when the paths aren't baked hard and the crowds are thinner. Summer gets rammed with day-trippers.

The walk suits anyone reasonably fit. Kids who can manage a steep hill will love the sense of achievement at the summit. It's not technical or treacherous, just proper cardio uphill. Go early if the weather's looking iffy - Cotswold summits can cloud over fast.
