Shurdington Hill

Standing at 1,083 feet above sea level, this modest Cotswold escarpment offers surprisingly rewarding views across Gloucestershire's rolling countryside. The walk up from Shurdington village takes about 45 minutes through typical limestone grassland, with the final stretch requiring a bit of puff as the gradient steepens. Worth it though - on a clear day you can see right across to the Welsh hills and down into the Severn Vale.

Walkers will appreciate the well-marked bridleways that crisscross the hill, while families with older children (say 8+) should manage the climb without too much moaning. The younger ones might struggle with the distance and incline. Dog owners love this spot, though keep them on leads during lambing season. The hill forms part of the larger Leckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common area, so you can easily extend your ramble if the mood takes you.

Being open countryside, there's no admission fee and you can visit any time. Best avoided in thick fog or after heavy rain when the paths get properly muddy. From Cheltenham it's just a short drive south to the village, making it an easy half-day trip from any of the nearby holiday parks around Briarfields or the glamping spots closer to town.
