Laughton Greenwood

The woodland at Laughton stretches across Sussex countryside just outside Hailsham, offering proper walking territory through mature trees and open glades. It's the sort of place where you can actually breathe - no crowds, no visitor centre fuss, just paths winding through mixed woodland with occasional clearings that catch the light nicely.

Walkers will find this genuinely rewarding. The reserve isn't massive, so you're looking at a solid hour to ninety minutes depending on how often you stop to listen for birds or check the undergrowth. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing - the woodland supports a decent variety of species, particularly in spring and early summer. Families with older kids do well here; the paths are manageable enough, though it's not a push-along-the-buggy situation.

It's free to access and there don't appear to be any formal opening hours, which means you can visit pretty much whenever suits you. That flexibility is actually rather nice. The ground can get muddy in winter, so proper boots are worth planning for.

If you're camped at one of the nearby sites - Golden Cross is closest at just over a mile away, or Dernwood Farm if you fancy glamping - this makes an excellent morning walk before breakfast or an evening potter when the light's going soft. It won't take a full day, but paired with exploring Hailsham's High Street or taking on the South Downs proper, it slots in rather well to a wider Sussex itinerary.
