Camberlot Wood

Walking into Camberlot Wood near Hailsham feels like stepping properly off the beaten path. This Sussex forest offers the kind of quiet woodland experience you don't get in the overcrowded nature reserves closer to the coast. The trees are dense enough to feel properly immersive, with decent paths threading through without being manicured into sterility.

It's ideal for a decent woodland walk rather than a quick stroll. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly without rushing. Families with older kids (say, eight and up) will find plenty to occupy them - fallen logs to clamber over, streams to spot, the general business of being among trees. Younger ones might find it a bit samey after half an hour, if I'm honest.

The woodland sits well within reach of several camping spots. Hale Farm Campsite is just two miles away, Golden Cross Holiday Park even closer at 1.1 miles, so you could easily base yourself at one of those and use Camberlot for a morning's ramble. Horam Manor Country Park and Warren Wood Country Park are also within striking distance if you fancy mixing your woodland visits.

What works here is the lack of fuss. No visitor centre, no admission charge to worry about, no crowds. Just trees, paths, and the kind of Sussex countryside that rewards a bit of proper exploration. Go mid-week if you can - weekends do bring the local dog walkers and families, which doesn't spoil it but takes the edge off the solitude.
