Larry's Wood

A proper woodland walk through mature beech and oak, Larry's Wood sits just outside Kent and makes for a solid half-day outing if you're camped nearby. The paths wind through decent-sized trees with enough cover to feel like a proper forest even on drizzly days - which, let's be honest, is most days round here.

It's not dramatic or famous. No waterfall, no viewpoint that'll make your Instagram followers weep. But if you've got restless kids or you fancy a leg-stretch without committing to a full fell walk, it does the job. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, paths are reasonably clear, and you'll spot the occasional deer if you're lucky enough.

Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on which route you take and how often the children insist on stopping to collect leaves. It's free to access and there's no real infrastructure - no cafe, no visitor centre, no facilities. Bring water and sensible footwear because it gets boggy after rain.

If you're staying at Dunn Street Farm Campsite just down the road, it's worth combining with the woodland for a proper outdoors day. The nearby Longberry Farm Glamping site gives you somewhere more upmarket to base yourself if you want to explore a bit further afield. Early morning visits are best - fewer dog walkers and the light filters through the canopy nicely.
