Hothfield Waterfall

Water cascades down a modest but genuine waterfall in the Kent countryside - proper unexpected when you're this far south and east. Hothfield Waterfall isn't dramatic in the Swiss Alps sense, but it's a working natural feature that rewards a short woodland walk, and frankly, waterfalls anywhere near the south coast are rare enough to warrant the detour.

The walk itself takes you through pleasant mixed woodland, the kind of landscape that makes a refreshing change from open parkland. It's manageable for families with older kids and anyone who doesn't mind a bit of mud after rain. Bring decent boots though - the approach can be waterlogged depending on the season. The actual drop isn't towering, but there's something satisfying about finding moving water in deepest Kent.

Timing matters here. Visit after decent rainfall and you'll see the waterfall properly flowing. In drought conditions it's barely a trickle, which rather defeats the purpose. Spring and autumn tend to be your best bets. Allow an hour for the walk and a poke around, though you could do it quicker if you're just after a quick photo.

It's the sort of thing that fits naturally into a wider park holiday rather than a destination in itself. Worth knowing about if you're in the area, but don't rearrange your entire trip around it.
