Butler's Toll

Butler's Toll is a modest peak in Kent that rewards the walk without demanding mountaineering skills. It's the sort of place where you get proper views across the Weald without needing specialist kit or arriving at dawn - though arriving early does beat the crowds.

The walk itself is straightforward woodland terrain, taking a good hour or so depending on your pace and where you start from. Families with children aged eight and up will manage it fine, though younger ones might find their legs complaining on the return journey. The summit itself is relatively compact - don't expect a sprawling plateau, but rather a clearing with sight lines that stretch well into the distance on a clear day.

It's free to visit, naturally. No visitor centre, no cafes, no facilities at all, so bring water and snacks. Go midweek if you can; weekends bring day-trippers from nearby towns and the car parks fill up quickly.

If you're based at one of the local campsites - Dunn Street Farm is closest at just 1.7 miles away, though Longberry Farm Glamping and Broadhembury further out also work - this makes a solid half-day outing without the faffing about of a major attraction. It's the kind of walk that feels purposeful without being exhausting, which honestly is what most people actually want from a day out. Pair it with exploring the surrounding Kent countryside and you've got a decent morning sorted.
