Lane Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination with facilities - Lane Wood sits just outside Egloshayle and offers the kind of quiet forest ramble you don't need to overthink. There's no visitor centre, no car park with loos, no gift shop. You just turn up and walk among the trees.

The wood itself is dense and green, with paths that wind through mature woodland. On a decent day it's peaceful enough, the sort of place where you might actually hear birds. On a wet day - and this is Cornwall - it becomes properly muddy. Bring boots. The paths aren't exactly marked out like a country park, so it helps to know where you're going rather than just winging it.

Walkers will get the most out of this. If you're after a short leg-stretch between beaches or a break from the holiday park, it works. Young kids might manage a loop if they're keen, but there's no playground or water feature to hold their attention. Families wanting proper trails might be better served elsewhere.

It's free, naturally, and you can spend anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours depending on how far you venture. The nearby holiday parks - The Laurels, St Minver, and Porthilly Beach are all within easy reach - make this a useful addition to a Padstow area break. Think of it as the forest walk you slot in between proper attractions, not the main event.
