Undertown Wood

A proper woodland walk without the crowds - that's what Undertown Wood offers if you're based around Egloshayle. The forest sits thick with established trees, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think rather than dodging tour groups. It's straightforward walking territory, nothing too demanding, though you'll want decent boots after rain because the paths get boggy.

This works best for walkers who want a gentle ramble rather than a destination in itself. Families with young kids might find an hour here sufficient before restlessness sets in - there's not a great deal to do beyond the walking itself, no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of. But if you're staying at St Minver Holiday Park or Porthilly Beach Holiday Park, it's close enough for an easy morning outing. Porthilly, mind you, has the better reputation if you're choosing where to base yourself.

The woodland feels genuinely quiet, which is rare in Cornwall these days. You won't find information boards or marked routes that I could identify, so it helps to know what you're after - a bit of peace, some fresh air, canopy cover when the weather turns. Go midweek if possible. Weekends pull in more people, which rather defeats the purpose.

Worth the detour if you're already in the area and fancy escaping the coast for an afternoon. On its own? Probably not worth the trip from further afield.
