Kestle Wood

Walk into Kestle Wood and you're genuinely surrounded - tall conifers block out most of the sky, and the ground squelches with moss and leaf litter even in dry spells. It's the sort of place that feels older than it probably is, with paths that wind between the trees without much fuss or signposting.

This isn't a destination woodland with viewing platforms or a visitor centre. It's a proper working forest near Egloshayle where you come to walk, breathe in the pine scent, and listen to birds. The canopy is dense enough that it stays cool even on warm days, which means summer visits are genuinely pleasant rather than sticky. You could spend an hour here easily, maybe two if you're the type who likes to wander off-piste and poke around.

Families with young children will manage fine as long as they're reasonable walkers - the paths are manageable, though muddy patches are common. Older kids might find it a bit samey after a while. It's really the sort of place that appeals more to adults after a bit of quiet, or anyone who wants something low-key between proper attractions.

If you're staying at Porthilly Beach Holiday Park nearby, which is excellent by the way, or the perfectly decent St Minver Holiday Park, Kestle Wood makes a solid half-morning sortie. Don't expect signage or facilities - bring a flask and waterproofs. It costs nothing and asks nothing of you.
