Lancaster Priory

You'll spot the massive sandstone tower long before you reach the Priory itself - it dominates Lancaster's skyline like something from a medieval postcard. This isn't a ruin you wander round in thirty minutes. The Priory is a proper working church, founded back in 1094, and the current building is largely 14th and 15th century work, which means the stone has absorbed nearly 700 years of Lancashire weather.

Inside, the chancel is genuinely impressive. High vaulted ceilings, ornate woodwork, and windows that flood the place with proper light. The choir stalls are worth a closer look if you're into that sort of craftsmanship - they're detailed work. There's also a decent amount of medieval carving dotted about, some of it surprisingly fine given what time has done to it.

This works best if you're into church architecture or local history. Walking round takes a solid hour if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through. It's free to get in, which is always welcome. The location, just off Carnforth's main drag, means you can tie it in easily with other bits of Lancashire touring. If you're staying at Ocean Edge over towards Morecambe Bay, it's worth the short drive inland.

The real trick is going when there isn't a service on - you'll get proper peace to look round. Sunday mornings are best avoided unless you fancy joining the congregation.
