Water this clear doesn't appear often in Lancashire, and Lake 2 near Bury is proof that you needn't travel far for proper outdoor space. It's a working gravel pit that's been transformed into a genuine recreational lake - the sort of place where locals actually spend weekends, not somewhere with manicured edges and visitor centres.

The lake itself is the main draw. You can walk the perimeter on a decent path, though don't expect dramatic peaks or woodland drama - this is flat, open country with agricultural land pressing in around the water. Birdwatchers get genuinely excited here because the open water attracts species you won't see in the busy bits of Manchester. Fishing's permitted too, and you'll spot anglers set up from dawn onwards.

It works best if you're already in the area rather than making a special trip. The walk takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, and families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - there's nowhere to grab refreshments, no play equipment. But tack it onto a broader exploration of the region and it slots in perfectly. Dearden Wood holiday park sits less than six miles away and makes a convenient base.

Go early morning or late afternoon if you want solitude. The midday glare can be harsh on the water, and the paths get busy with dog walkers from mid-morning. Admission appears free, and there's space to park near the access point.
