Lady Wood

Lady Wood is a proper slice of ancient woodland tucked between Yarmouth and the centre of the Isle of Wight. Walking through here feels like stepping back several centuries - the trees are old, the paths are worn, and there's that particular quiet you only get in established forests. You'll find yourself among oak, ash, and beech, with a network of trails that range from gentle strolls to more energetic rambles depending on what mood you're in.

It's the kind of place walkers genuinely enjoy, particularly those interested in how the island's natural history has evolved. The woodland is managed for conservation, so you're seeing something closer to what the Wight would have looked like before modern farming took over. Kids won't necessarily be blown away unless they're the type to get excited about spotting wildlife and climbing fallen logs, but it's a solid hour or two of fresh air without the crowds you'd find at some of the island's busier attractions.

The beauty of staying at somewhere like Tom's Eco Lodge or Tapnell Farm - both within four miles - is you can base yourself nearby and explore Lady Wood at leisure without needing a full day commitment. Free access, no facilities to speak of, so bring water and wear proper footwear. Best visited in spring when the canopy hasn't fully closed, or autumn when the light does something special through the leaves. Winter can be muddy; summer tends towards damp and buggy.
