A proper Essex woodland that actually rewards the effort to find it, Lady Wood sits east of Dunmow in a landscape that doesn't exactly scream 'destination'. Yet once you're under the canopy, it's the kind of place that makes you understand why people bang on about getting out into nature.

The wood is a straightforward affair - dense enough to feel like you've properly left things behind, with decent paths that cater to both casual wanderers and anyone after a legitimate forest walk. The trees are mature, the undergrowth does its thing, and you'll likely spot birds rather than hordes of people. It's the sort of spot where an hour turns into two without you noticing.

Families with younger kids will manage the main routes without complaint, though don't come expecting playgrounds or facilities. Dog walkers seem to make up the bulk of visitors, which tells you something about how local it is. Serious nature watchers and photographers should visit at dawn or dusk when the wood actually feels alive.

There's no charge that we can establish, and it's genuinely free parking at the entrance. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper circuit, though you can potter about for thirty minutes if time's tight. Dunmow itself is close enough for supplies.
