Ladle Hill

The walk up Ladle Hill rewards you with proper views across the Berkshire Downs - nothing dramatic, but the kind of rolling landscape that makes you understand why people fought over this land centuries ago. You're looking at an Iron Age hill fort here, and the earthworks are still clear enough to trace if you know what you're doing. The ramparts and ditches speak volumes about settlement patterns, even if you can't see the structures themselves anymore.

Getting there from Newbury takes about twenty minutes by car, and the walk from the car park is mercifully short - under a mile - so families with younger legs won't grumble. Bring a map though; the paths aren't always obvious once you're on the plateau. The site's free to access, and there's no visitor infrastructure, which means it stays peaceful and genuinely feels like you've discovered something rather than ticked a box.

History enthusiasts will spend a solid hour here, poking about the ramparts and imagining the settlement. Casual walkers might manage forty minutes before heading back. The views aren't dramatic enough to warrant a long detour on their own, but if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Bishops Green or Hollington Park, both excellent - it's absolutely worth combining with a broader Downs walk. Cherry Bird Country Park is slightly further afield but offers a different flavour if you want more manicured grounds alongside your walking. The real charm of Ladle Hill is its lack of crowds and fuss. It's the sort of place that stays with you precisely because it doesn't try to impress.
