Knowle Plantation

Walking into Knowle Plantation feels like stepping into something genuinely old. This isn't a manicured arboretum - it's a proper working forest in North Yorkshire, spread across the landscape near Leyburn, with the kind of dense woodland that makes you understand why people used to be genuinely cautious about forests.

The plantation itself is a mix of established trees and younger growth, the sort of place where you can actually see forestry management in action rather than just admiring the results. Paths wind through, though conditions vary wildly depending on recent weather - it can be gloriously dry and crunchy underfoot one week, then boggy as hell the next. There's no obvious visitor infrastructure here, which is either refreshing or slightly annoying depending on whether you like knowing where you are.

Historically minded walkers will get something out of the bones of the place, though there isn't a lot of interpretation on site. Families with younger kids might find it a touch underwhelming unless they're the type to enjoy a proper stomp through woodland without expecting playgrounds or facilities. Serious walkers absolutely should come - it's the kind of forest that rewards proper exploration.

Being so close to Leyburn means you can combine this with the broader walking country of the dale. Eastfield Glamping Farm and Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park are both within reasonable distance if you're planning a longer stay, and either would work well as a base for exploring both the woodland and the wider Wensleydale landscape. No admission fee, just turn up and walk.
