Knott Rigg

The walk up Knott Rigg from Cockermouth way isn't going to take your breath away with the gradient - it's one of those proper forgiving peaks that rewards effort without demanding it. You're looking at decent views across the Lake District fells once you've put in maybe 45 minutes to an hour of steady climbing, depending on which route you take. The summit itself is modest but the surrounding landscape - rolling valleys, Skiddaw brooding off to the east, the Solway Firth glinting on clear days - makes the effort worthwhile.

It's a walker's hill rather than a scrambler's. Families with older kids who can handle a couple of hours on their feet will have a proper good day here. You won't find it rammed with crowds either, which is refreshing if you've just escaped the chaos of Catbells or Walla Crag. Allow three hours return if you're not rushing and you want to sit about at the top with a flask.

Based near Cockermouth, you're ideally positioned. Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club sits just over four miles away and is solid for families. Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite offers a quieter alternative, whilst Castlerigg Hall up towards Keswick is the fancier option if you want glamping thrown in with your camping. Any of them make decent bases for tackling Knott Rigg as part of a wider Lake District trip. The approach itself is straightforward - no scrambling, no exposed sections. Straightforward can be good.
