Kittycarter Burn

A small burn in rural Northumberland that's more about the walk than the destination itself. Kittycarter Burn sits quietly near Chathill, the kind of place you'd stumble upon while rambling rather than plan a special trip for. The water's modest - don't expect dramatic waterfalls or vast reservoirs - but the surrounding countryside rewards a proper explore.

Walkers will get the most from this spot. The area's all rolling farmland and quiet paths, perfect for stretching legs without the crowds you'd get at bigger attractions. You could easily combine it with the coastal caravan parks nearby - Beadnell Bay and Seafield are only five or six miles away - making it a decent detour on a day out from the coast. The walk itself takes an hour or so depending on how far you fancy pushing on.

It's free to access, naturally, being a burn in the middle of nowhere. No visitor centre, no facilities, just you and the Northumberland countryside. Best visited on a clear day when the light's decent across the fields. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper trudge will enjoy it; younger children might find it a bit tame unless they're into spotting insects and wildlife.

Honestly? It's not a reason to book a holiday in itself. But if you're based at one of the caravan sites along the coast and fancy breaking up a week of beach days with some inland walking, it's well worth twenty minutes' drive. The real appeal is the quiet - you won't see many others out here.
