Kit's Coty House

You'll find yourself standing in front of a proper ancient monument - three massive sarsen stones propping up a capstone, all that remains of a Neolithic burial chamber dating back around 4,500 years. It's located just outside Aylesford in Kent, sat in a field that's remarkably untouched by the modern world despite being so close to civilisation.

What you're looking at is genuinely impressive, even in its current state. The sheer weight of those stones makes you understand why our ancestors went to such effort to build these things. Most people spend twenty minutes here - long enough to walk around, take photos from a few angles, and absorb the fact that someone's remains were once sealed inside this structure when Stonehenge was still being built.

Walkers and history types will find it worthwhile, though families with very young children might find it a bit underwhelming after the initial wow factor passes. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards to speak of, and no facilities - it's just the stones and a field. Access is free and unrestricted, which is rather refreshing.

It works well as a stop-off on a wider Kent exploration. Kits Coty Glamping sits practically on the doorstep, while Oak View and Badgells Wood Camping are close enough for a short drive. Pair it with other archaeological sites in the area or use it as a quick morning detour before heading elsewhere. On its own it's not a destination, but it's genuinely absorbing if you've got an interest in prehistory.
