Kirmington Roman settlement

The Roman settlement at Kirmington is essentially a field with considerable history beneath it. What you're looking at - or rather, what you're not quite seeing - is the buried remains of a fortified settlement dating back roughly two millennia, sitting quietly in the Lincolnshire landscape between Market Rasen and the coast.

Unless there's active excavation happening, you won't find much in the way of visible structures or a visitor centre. It's the kind of place that appeals to Roman archaeology enthusiasts or serious local history types rather than casual tourists. The settlement itself was significant enough to be excavated in the mid-20th century, revealing evidence of military occupation and civilian activity, but those finds have mostly migrated to museums elsewhere.

If you're based at Wolds View Country Park just down the road, it's worth a detour for a walk and a bit of context about what the Romans were doing in this corner of Lincolnshire - the site's strategic position near what would have been important supply routes made it proper useful as a defensive post. Bring a map or at least know roughly where to look, though, because there's not much signposting to guide you.

For families, it's a bit of a stretch unless the kids are genuinely interested in Roman Britain. Walkers will find the surrounding countryside pleasant enough, and it pairs well with exploring other archaeological sites across the county. Budget an hour at most, and go in autumn or spring when the fields aren't waterlogged.
