Kirkgate Park

The wetland reserve at Kirkgate sits just outside Kinross, a proper haven if you're after something quieter than the usual tourist hotspots. It's a working nature reserve - reed beds, open water, scrubby woodland - the sort of place where you'll actually see things rather than just walk round looking at fences.

Birdwatchers get the most from Kirkgate. Bring binoculars and you'll spot waterfowl throughout the year, with spring and autumn migrations being particularly lively. It's also decent for a gentle walk with kids, though they'll need to be the sort who find dragonflies exciting rather than theme parks. The paths are straightforward, flat enough, and the whole thing takes about an hour if you're not stopping constantly.

There's no charge to get in, and no fixed hours that we can pin down - it operates on a trust-us basis. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's proper and the birds are most active. Midday in summer feels pointless; everything's tucked away in the heat.

If you're staying at Gallowhill just down the road, this works as an easy morning excursion before heading elsewhere in Tayside. Wild Goose Glamping is further out but still within reach for a detour. The reserve itself is small enough that you won't spend half a day here, but it slots nicely into a broader Perthshire loop - combine it with a visit to Kinross town itself or one of the bigger country estates nearby. Best visited between April and September when there's genuinely something to see.
